Restaurant premises at the new Kamppi Center are selling well. Up to twenty new restaurants and cafés with combined seating capacity for over 2,500 people are expected to add to the choice of eateries in downtown Helsinki.
The Kamppi Center constructor SRV Viitoset has commissioned the hospitality consulting group Actival Oy to find suitable enterprises to occupy the restaurant premises.
According to managing director Ari Larnemaa of Actival Oy, some 95 percent of the offered spaces have already been agreed on. Some contracts have already been signed, while others are still being formulated.
Once opened, the Kamppi Center will host local restaurants as well as domestic and foreign restaurant chains. Some of the eateries will make use of the fast food concept.
According to Larnemaa, apart from entrepreneur Sedu Koskinen, who has announced he will open a penthouse nightclub in the complex, most of the other restaurants showing an interest have preferred to keep their plans secret for the time being.
Parts of the centre will open in June 2005 and the entire project should be complete by the spring of 2006.
Competition between restaurants has traditionally been fierce in central Helsinki. Within a three-square-kilometre area, there are already over 80,000 restaurant seats in over 250 businesses.
"Kamppi Center will slightly shift the regional fulcrum in Helsinki. Still, a few thousand new restaurant seats are not exactly a cause for widespread alarm within the business", Larnemaa believes.
