Two missing Finns and Canadian found alive in Kashmir
 |
The two Finns and a Canadian who went missing after going skiing in the higher reaches of Kashmir last weekend have been found alive. They were encountered by rescue teams while they were on their way back to the northern Indian Kashmir resort of Gulmarg on Thursday.
The three left Gulmarg on Saturday to ski towards a high-altitude Himalayan peak called Sunshine. A police officer said the trio had told the hotel staff that they would be gone for three to six days.
Indian security forces launched a major search on Tuesday after the men had not returned and there had been heavy snowfall in the region where they had gone skiing. The police and army used snowmobiles in their search for the three men.
"They have contacted our station and are in good shape", Neeraj Sharma of the Indian security forces told AFP (Agence France Presse).
Several hundred people are believed to have died in avalanches that crashed through villages in Kashmir last weekend, following snowfalls of almost unprecedented levels in the Himalayas. Hundreds more are also still thought to be missing.
