Two new suspects in investigation into activities of drug police

 print this
The late edition tabloid Iltalehti reported on Wednesday that two more suspects have been named in a case in which members of the illegal drugs unit of the Helsinki police face charges of using illegal methods in their investigations.
State Prosecutor Ari-Pekka Koivisto says that two police officers who had not previously been mentioned in the investigations, were interrogated during the weekend.

A total of eight police officers and the head of the squad face charges of malfeasance.
The police are alleged to have used illegal means of gathering information on the illegal drugs market, including allowing informers to continue committing drug crimes in exchange for information.
All of the officers continue to deny any wrongdoing, saying that someone is trying to smoke them out of their jobs.
"The next big phase in the work will be when the investigation secretary transcribes the taped interviews. At the same time, background research and preparations for new interrogations will continue", Koivisto said on Wednesday.
