UN court rules in favour of Uruguay in pulp mill dispute
The United Nations International Court in The Hague has ruled in favour of Uruguay in that country’s dispute with Argentina on a Finnish-built pulp mill in Fray Bentos on the Uruguayan side of a river that forms the border between the two countries.
The mill has been a source of serious friction between Argentina and its northern neighbour Uruguay.
The court found that the mill, built by the Finnish company Metsä Botnia, and now owned by another Finnish company UPM, does not pollute the river, in violation of the border treaty between the countries, which they signed in 1975.
However, the court also find that Uruguay did violate the treaty by not informing Argentina in advance of the plans to build the the mill.
