In the ”beauty contest” among Finnish forest industry firms, the papermaker UPM overtook Stora Enso, another forest industry giant, in the last quarter of 2011.
The sales of EUR 2,686 million posted by UPM in the 4th quarter were four million euros higher than those of Stora Enso.
However, UPM’s full year sales were EUR 10,068 million, while those of Stora Enso were EUR 10,965 million. Metsäliitto’s sales for 2011 amounted to EUR 5,346 million. Metsäliitto publöished its figures on Thursday, posting a result before taxes and excluding non-recurring items of EUR 195 million.
The leading position of UPM is attributable to the fact that the Myllykoski paper mill joined the UPM family last summer. When it comes to the full year sales for 2011, Stora Enso was still the largest forest company.
Among all Finnish forest companies, Stora Enso’s net result was the highest, while that of the rivalling Metsäliitto was the lowest.
When it comes to return on capital, both Stora Enso and Metsäliitto did better than UPM.
