Eyes and cameras were pointed skywards on Wednesday when the U.S. Air Force’s Thunderbirds aerobatic team performed a fly-by over the Finnish capital.
Six F-16 fighter jets belonging to the crack display squadron were seen in formation in the city’s sky precisely at 13:00 as announced.
In Kaivopuisto alone, there were several hundred people on hand to witness the speedy fly-by, quite a few of them under the slight misconception that the aircraft were to perform a full aerobatics display rather than a quick courtesy call.
After the aircraft disappeared into the distance, many stayed around to await their anticipated return, but in vain.
The planes that flew along Helsinki’s coastline were returning from a tour of the Baltic States.
Their destination on Wednesday was the Turku Airport.
The team's scheduled appearance at the Turku Airshow last weekend unfortunately had to be cancelled owing to inclement weather.
