University of Kuopio claws itself back into list of world’s best 500 universities

Now there are six (again).
      The University of Kuopio has made a comeback on the list of the best 500 universities in the world. The list, compiled by a Chinese university, ranks the world’s seats of higher learning based on scientific merits.
      The list was now published for the sixth time. On the first ranking from 2003 there were six academic institutions from Finland, including the University of Kuopio.
     
Since 2004, only the University of Helsinki, University of Oulu, University of Turku, Helsinki University of Technology, and University of Jyväskylä have made it to the list.
      The world’s top ten universities remain unchanged from last year. The number one is Harvard, followed by a host of other American educational institutes accompanied by the universities of Cambridge and Oxford from Great Britain.
      Of the Finnish educational establishments, the University of Helsinki is in a league of its own, improving its ranking to 68 from last year’s 73. The universities of Oulu and Turku made it into the category of places 300-400, while the Helsinki University of Technology, University of Jyväskylä, and University of Kuopio find themselves in the group 400-500.
     
The only Finnish educational institute on the list of the best one hundred European universities is the University of Helsinki, ranked 19th.
      Finland, and the University of Helsinki, can boast little by way of bragging rights in this department. Among its Nordic rivals, the University of Copenhagen was ranked 8th, Stockholm’s Karolinska Institute 11th, and the University of Oslo 17th. From Sweden, no fewer than eight other universities also made it to the European Top 100 list.
     
The Shanghai-based Jiao Tong University ranks universities by several indicators of academic and research performance, including alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, highly cited researchers, articles published in scientific journals, and academic performance with respect to the size of an institution.
