The mobile phone manufacturer Nokia has confirmed that it plans to cut hundreds of jobs at its factory in Salo in the southwest of Finland. Nokia announced on Wednesday morning that a maximum of 1,000 jobs would go from the Salo facility.
The company also plans to eliminate 3,000 jobs at its factories in Hungary and Mexico. The manufacture of mobile telephones is to increasingly concentrate on Asia.
"Shifting device assembly to Asia is targeted at improving our time to market. By working more closely with our suppliers, we believe that we will be able to introduce innovations into the market more quickly and ultimately be more competitive," said Niklas Savander, executive vice president of Nokia Markets.
Savander emphasised that Nokia understands that the changes are difficult for the company’s personnel, and that it is committed to support personnel and local communities during the changes.
The company says that the job cuts would be implemented by the end of the year.
Nokia said in September that it would implement changes in the manufacture of smartphones aimed at better competitiveness on the global mobile phone market.
In the future, the factories located in Salo, Hungary, and Mexico will concentrate on tailoring the software content of smartphones according to the wishes of customers.
