As Helsingin Sanomat reported earlier this week, a number of valuable old paintings were deliberately damaged in Turku Castle, presumably late last week.
The destruction of paintings had taken place systematically in various parts of the castle.
According to the museum’s experts, the damage to the paintings has been found to be less extensive than initially suspected.
Eleven works of art on display have been dented or punctured. Moreover, four pieces of antique museum furniture have been deliberately scratched, while the museum fittings have been vandalised in some other ways.
At first, it was feared that as many as 20 works of art could have been damaged. Some of the valuable paintings have visible holes the size of a thumb-tip.
The damage to the paintings was noticed last Saturday, whereupon the Turku Police were notified.
The Turku Provincial Museum has also stepped up the security level at the castle.
The police have received a number of leads from museum visitors.
