Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen (Centre) will not seek his party’s nomination for the Presidency in 2012, says the newspaper Kaleva on Sunday.
In the previous elections, in 2006, Vanhanen came in third, behind Tarja Halonen and Sauli Niinistö.

An opinion poll published by the Finnish Broadcasting Company (YLE) puts Vanhanen between two National Coalition Party figures; Speaker of Parliament Niinistö is the front runner, with 44.3 per cent support, with Minister for Foreign Affairs Alexander Stubb getting 6.6 per cent, with Vanhanen coming in slightly ahead of Stubb with approximately seven per cent support..
A poll published a week ago by the newspaper Iltalehti put Vanhanen in third place.
The YLE poll, conducted by Taloustutkimus, showed that MP Erkki Tuomioja is the most popular potential candidate among the Social Democrats, with 4.0 per cent support.
