Vantaa population exceeds 200,000
Vantaa has become the fourth city in Finland whose population has exceeded 200,000.
The city calculates that the 200,000th Vantaa resident is Kerkko Olavi Kumpulainen, who was born on January 14th.
City administrators visited the boy and his parents Saija Männistö and Arto Kumpulainen in the Ylästö district of Vantaa on Wednesday.
In addition to bringing flowers and a glass bird designed by Oiva Toikka, the city presented the family with a gift certificate worth EUR 2,000, or 200,000 cents.
The previous time that a new resident was feted in Vantaa was in 1973, when the population reached 100,000. In Espoo the population exceeded 200,000 in 1997. Tampere reached the same number of residents in 2003.
