Previously played  for TPS Turku. Was Montreal’s 1st round pick (21st overall) in the 1993 draft.
     
Has played nine seasons in the NHL. 497 games, 120 goals + 278 assists = 398 points. Playoffs totals: 40 games, 13+21=34.
     
NHL All-Star Game 1998; won Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy 2002.
     
IIHF World Championships, gold 1995, silver 1994; Olympic bronze medal Lillehammer 1994 and Nagano 1998.
     
Finnish Championship with TPS Turku 1993 and 1995.
     
Married to Hanna since July 2002.
     
His younger brother, Mikko Koivu, 21, is also in the Finnish national team, and currently plays for TPS Turku, though he was drafted in 2001 by the NHL’s Minnesota Wild.
