Winter: Not going anywhere anytime soon

Winter: Not going anywhere anytime soon
 print this
Cross-country skiers in the Helsinki region can relax, as winter is set to continue for a while longer in Southern Finland.
This week we can expect to get a little more snow, and spring is not going to melt eveything away, at least not during the coming seven days. Sharp night frosts will see to that.
"Overnight temperatures this week could go down as low as minus10°C", forecasts Soili Salmi of the Finnish Meteorological Institute.

Out on the frozen sea, it is not yet quite time to fear thin ice, but by contrast drivers would be wise to watch out for some slippery roads in the early mornings.
The weekend saw the first real bright sunshine for some time, raising hopes that spring might be on its way. No such luck. The snow cover will nevertheless gradually recede, as above-zero daytime temperatures will eat into it bit by bit.
If a little more snow is promised in southern and central districts in the next few days, the long-term outlook for next weekend is more sunshine. Which is nice.
