YLE: Rauma shipyard wins large order from South Africa
According to a report by the news service of the Finnish Broadcasting Company (YLE), the STX Europe Rauma Shipyard has won a contract worth approximately EUR 160 million to build an Arctic/Antarctic research vessel for the South African Ministry of the Environment.
Martin Landtman, President, Cruise & Ferries in Finland for the South Korean owned shipbuilders, did not confirm the deal on Monday.
The contract is believed to provide work for approximately 1,000 employees at the yard for a year.
YLE quoted a ministry official Alan Robertson as saying that the price and technology offered by the Rauma yard were the best among four short-listed companies in the bidding process, and that the deal would be finalised next month.
The ice-reinforced vessel would reportedly be used in traffic between Cape Town and the southern continent.
