Speaker of Parliament Sauli Niinistö (Nat. Coalition Party) is the overwhelming favourite for the next Presidential race, according to a survey commissioned by the Finnish Broadcasting Company (YLE). However, Minister for Foreign Affairs Alexander Stubb (Nat. Coalition Party) has joined the ranks of the top three favourites.
The poll showed that 69 per cent of respondents put Niinistö among their top five favourites, while 37 per cent ranked him number one. None of the other 30 alternatives reached as high as 10 per cent.
Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen (Centre) was placed among the top five by 38 per cent of respondents. He is closely followed by Stubb, who was put among the five favourite choices by 35 per cent of respondents.

Of the other names, MP and former Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja (SDP), Minister of Finance and National Coalition Party leader Jyrki Katainen, former Nokia President and CEO Jorma Ollila, former Prime Minister Esko Aho (Centre), Minister of the Environment Paula Lehtomäki (Centre), and Former Prime Minister and Speaker of Parliament Paavo Lipponen are all placed among the top five contenders by 20-25 per cent of respondents.
Of the group, at least Tuomioja and Lipponen have said that they will not run in the 2012 Presidential election.

The survey was conducted on YLE’s behalf by the market research company Taloustutkimus as an Internet panel more than a month ago, between the 9th and 18th of July. Respondents included 2,010 adult Finns living in continental Finland. The margin of error was calculated at about 1.5 percentage points.

As an inverted view of popularity, the study also indicated that a largish section of the Finnish public would definitely not wish to see the former Foreign Minister Ilkka Kanerva (National Coalition Party) in the top job.
Some 36% would not like to see Kanerva elected, and former PM Esko Aho, former
SDP leader Eero Heinäluoma, and former Centre Party leader and Prime Minister Anneli Jäätteenmäki all got the thumbs-down from an uncomfortable number of respondents.
