According to the most recent professional survey conducted by research firm Universum, communications giant Nokia has lost its top position on the list of ideal Finnish employers for young professionals with an academic degree.
Nokia ranked 6th on Universum’s list of the most popular technical employers, and 4th on the list of the most popular employers in the business sector.
On the engineers’ list, the most popular choice for young Finnish engineers was the Finnish elevator manufacturer Kone, while the baking and confectionery firm Fazer topped the list among young business professionals.

The familiar Finnish companies managed to hold their ground.
Large corporations, including Finnair, Wärtsilä, and Fortum were among the most popular choices, while jobs in the trade and banking sectors also maintained their popularity, largely irrespective of how the companies have been faring lately.
However, the impact of the recession could be clearly seen in the forest sector.
Neither Stora Enso nor UPM figured high on the list of attractive companies.
The two companies fell dramatically in business students’ ideal employer rankings. Stora Enso was not even among the top 100 most attractive firms to work for, while UPM was on the wrong side of 50th place. Both did appear in the lists among engineer graduates, though without much distinction.

Stora Enso and UPM were accompanied by a number of crisis-ridden pharmaceutical companies. Orion, Pfizer, and AstraZeneca had all moved many places down on Universum’s ranking list.
The media sector - which has also been facing problems - seems equally to have lost some of its former glory.
The popularity of the Sanoma Group and that of the Finnish Broadcasting Company YLE has also fallen slightly, while the ranking of Alma Media appears to have dropped quite dramatically.

The online survey conducted by Universum involved 5,000 young professionals with an academic degree.
The respondents were divided into different categories according to their studies: Business, Engineering, and IT.
The average age of respondents was 31 years and they had some 5 years of work experience on average.
