The first copies of Iso Numero, a magazine in the style of Britain's The Big Issue, will be going on sale today as an alternative means of earning something for Roma beggars, the homeless, and others caught in the poverty trap.
Iso Numero is a 68-page cultural magazine aimed at helping the needy and providing a means of "working not begging".
The persons selling the magazine pay one euro for each copy and sell it on to the public for EUR 4.00. The seller can keep the difference. If the vendors have no initial capital whatsoever, a few copies can be given to them on credit, with payment made after the fact.
The content of the magazine has been culled for the most part from articles previously published in the pages of member magazines belonging to Kultti, the Association for Cultural, Scientific and Advocacy Magazines.
Among the contributing magazines are Tulva, Ydin, and Filmihullu.
According to the acting executive manager of Kultti, Hanna Kaisa Hellsten, thus far a decision has been made only on this one edition of the magazine.
"The 2,000 copies in the print-run will be sold during the course of the summer. After that we will take a look at what sort of experiences we have had with the project", says Hellsten.
The distribution of copies of Iso Numero to street-vendors will be coordinated by the Vailla vakinaista asuntoa NGO ("No Fixed Abode"), which has experience of the making and selling of the magazine Asukki for the homeless.
