The cruise ferry Silja Europa, which suffered a failure in its rudder system a week ago, will be repaired in Gdansk in Poland.
Initially the AS Tallink Group shipping company also considered the option of having the vessel go into dry-dock in Latvia.
The repairing of the fault in the ship’s rudderstock will be combined with a normal dockyard visit. According to the shipping company, the dockyard in Gdansk will be better suited to this purpose.

Silja Europa will return to service in accordance with the earlier announcement on December 11th. During the repairs it will be replaced by another Tallink Silja vessel, the Baltic Queen.
On Sunday, November 22nd, a rare and somewhat catastrophic fault in the rudderstock left the Silja Europa unmanageable in the south-west archipelago between the Åland Islands and Turku. She was eventually nursed back to Turku a day behind schedule with a tug in attendance. A board of inquiry has been set up to identify the cause of the fault.
The vessel’s new repair plans were first reported by the Oulu-based daily Kaleva.
