Jani Sievinen achieved his lowest position in four Olympics visits: fourth in Barcelona in 1992, second in Atlanta, eighth in Sydney, and now 20th in Athens. Had he made the final, it would have been the first time any swimmer achieved this in four successive Olympic Games. As a former world record holder and the winner of numerous medals at European and World Championship level, the veteran Sievinen was considered at least an outside chance for a medal.
