The area of Southern Thailand worst affected by the tsunami. Phuket Town itself emerged unscathed, but the beach resorts along the west coast all suffered considerable damage. The backpackers' paradise island of Ko Phi Phi Don was devastated, and the relatively new resort centre of Khao Lak, popular with Finnish and other Scandinavian tour groups, has been turned into a charnel-house.
