The Finnish crowd took warmly to Shaka Sola of Samoa. The big Samoan
arrived in Helsinki too late to take part in the shot put, and so he
entered instead for the javelin qualifying competition. His third
attempt of 41.81 was met with huge roars of applause, not least because
of the athlete's style. He took only a two-step runup before throwing
the javelin. Needless to say, the good-humoured visitor from afar did
not qualify, but he certainly won a lot of hearts.
