The map shows the area of Karelia in south-eastern Finland that was ceded to the Soviet Union in the 1940s. Viipuri (Vyborg) was in fact the second-largest city in Finland in 1939. Practically the entire population of 80,000 was evacuated out of the area, and Finland resettled more than 400,000 refugees from Karelia after WW2.
