The Finnish flag dates from 1918, although the current blue-crossed design was first used in Finland by Nyländska Jaktklubben, a yacht club founded in Helsinki in 1861. After Independence, when a competition was arranged for the design of the national standard, the red and yellow colours of the Finnish coat of arms vied for prominence with the eventual blue and white combination.
