Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen met with Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Wednesday. Putin announced that the planned tariffs on raw timber would be postponed by roughly a year. The move came as a surprise to Vanhanen, who denied that there would be any quid pro quo in the form of a favourable Finnish response to the Nord Stream natural gas pipeline venture.
