A high-speed rail link between Helsinki and St. Petersburg (Pietari) is to come into service in the autumn of 2010. The current journey time of nearly six hours or more will eventually be reduced to three hours city-to-city. In practice, flying the distance takes four to five hours, allowing for time getting to and from airports and checking in.
