The number of applications for naturalisation have been increasing in recent years, from around 2,000 in 2004 to nearly 3,400 last year. The bulk of the applications for Finnish citizenship in 2008 came from nationals of the Russian Federation, with Somalia and Afghanistan taking the second and third places. Just over 200 Estonian citizens also sought Finnish citizenship, although Estonia is now a part of the European Union.
