The platform at Helsinki’s Hakaniemi Metro station is of the longer kind, running to 135 metres. This enables a train of three double-carriage units - each carrying a maximum of 288 passengers - to stop and pick up and deposit passengers. A 90-metre platform would mean that only two such double-car units could be run at any one time. If the time-gap between trains is reduced from four minutes to two and a half, then the carrying capacity of the system will be unimpaired, but some believe this is an unlikely scenario, and fear that increased traveller numbers and smaller trains will create a perfect crush.
