Jussi Pajunen is to be new Mayor of Helsinki
As expected, the Chairman of the Helsinki City Board, Jussi Pajunen (Nat. Coalition), was chosen as Mayor of Helsinki for the next seven years. The Helsinki City Council made an unanimous decision on the appointment without putting the issue to a vote, at its meeting on Wednesday evening.
While the appointment was based on an agreement among the major political parties, the extreme left Communist Party of Finland (SKP) and the Left Alliance both expressed criticism over the methods of the election procedure. Similarly, while accepting such political appointments in general, the Swedish People's Party representatives did not appreciate the fact that there was only one good candidate to run for the post. Helsinki politics are dominated by the triumvirate of National Coalition Party, Social Democrats, and Greens. The present Mayor Eva-Riitta Siitonen will retire at the end of May, and Jussi Pajunen's term as the new Mayor of Helsinki will start on June 1st.
