Helsinki's "pub tram" celebrates 10 years
The Sinebrychoff brewery's "pub tram" in its familiar red livery (as opposed to the green of the other trams operated by Helsinki City Transport) will mark up its 10th birthday on May Eve.
Known locally as the SpÄraKOFF, from the Swedish word for tram and the product that is served inside the vehicle, the tram is a popular sight during the summer in the capital. The tram currently in use for the service actually carried passengers normally for 35 years from its introduction in October 1959. During its career as a city tram, it travelled a few million kilometres and carried more than 20 million passengers. In 1994 the tram was retired to the sheds, before being refitted for its new role as a mobile watering-hole. Since then it has carried more than 100,000 passengers, many of them tourists. This year the tram will be in service from May 10th to August 13th.
