Nokia unveils its new N-series multimedia phone range

Nokia unveils its new N-series multimedia phone range
The Finnish mobile phone manufacturer Nokia announced yesterday the new Nokia N-series range of next generation multimedia devices. In order to help customers to make a difference between the new 3G camera phones and the basic models, the new N-series multimedia phone range has been re-named. Hence, the old four-digit model codes have been replaced by shorter names including the N70, N90, and N91.
"While the new N-series devices share similar design traits with basic mobile phones, they are actually entirely different: powerful pocketable computers with a comprehensive set of multimedia features", said Anssi Vanjoki, Executive Vice President, Multimedia, at a Nokia news conference in Amsterdam on Wednesday.
Moreover, Vanjoki reported that the first Nokia N-series product, the N90, is the world's first camera phone equipped with Carl Zeiss optics. The Nokia N90 is expected to become available in May-June this year.

The new N-series range will enhance the profile of the new Nokia Multimedia business group, which started operations at the beginning of last year. Its high-end product portfolio now clearly differs from the less expensive basic devices of the Mobile Phones group.
Neither Vanjoki nor Nokia Chairman and CEO Jorma Ollila revealed whether Nokia is going to replace even its other traditional four-digit names of phones. The significance of the name to the brand grows along with the increasing number of models.
In comparison, Nokia's American competitor Motorola recently started re-naming its new up-market phones using four-letter codes that resemble familiar English words, for example the slim-lined RAZR model.

On Wednesday, Nokia also introduced the company's latest device optimised for music, the Nokia N91 multimedia handset. The N91 comes with a 4-gigabyte hard disk, allowing users to store up to 3,000 songs on their phone. Nokia hopes that with the new features the N91 will pose a challenge to the dominant Apple iPod, which can accommodate as much as 60 gigabytes of music.
The Nokia N91 multimedia handset is expected to become commercially available worldwide by the end of 2005.

While introducing the new N90 camera phone equipped with Carl Zeiss optics and a 2 megapixel lens, Nokia representatives expressed surprise over the fact that some consumers still buy ordinary digital cameras, even though camera phones are available.
"The most difficult feature of a mobile phone is the optics", said Juha Putkiranta of Nokia's Multimedia group. Therefore, Nokia has made an exclusive contract on the use of Carl Zeiss optics in its mobile phones.
