Bodom murder trial visits crime scene, 45 years after the fact
The trial of Nils Gustafsson on charges of the three Bodom Lake murders committed in 1960 left the Espoo District Court premises on Monday and went on an excursion to the scene of the crime.
The purpose was to see the places where witnesses made their observations 45 years ago. The landscape has changed somewhat, but the profile of the area is naturally still the same. Shortly before 10 a.m. all the various parties, including judges and prosecuting and defence counsels and the accused himself, stepped onto the headland, which had been cordoned off by police. They carried with them original drawings, maps, and photographs of the scene as it was in June 1960, when the bodies of three young campers and the injured Gustafsson were found under a collapsed tent. Around 100 people watched from the other side of the police cordon, most of them representatives of the media. Among the journalists behind the ropes, there was black humour in remarks that now at last the police had managed to close off the crime-scene properly. There have been comments that the initial investigation in 1960 was not carried out with the scrupulousness and attention to detail that is required today. The trial continues on Tuesday with the first of the witness statements, and these will continue through this week.
