Five Finnish universities again among top 500 in the world
The list published for the fourth time by a Chinese university, ranking the world's top 500 further education establishments universities in the order of superiority, looks a great deal like the one from last year: the top ten universities remain unchanged, and the rankings and order of the Finnish seats of learning are also more or less the same.
The first ten positions are once again taken by top American universities, accompanied by their British rivals, Cambridge (2nd) and Oxford (10th). Harvard heads the list, with Stanford in third place. The listing is primarily based on research achievements. Of the Finnish institutes of higher education, the University of Helsinki shared the #74 position with the University of Rochester in Rochester, NY. Last year, Helsinki was ranked at number 76. "The international competition is so tough these days that we can be satisfied with maintaining our rankings", Rector Keijo Virtanen from the University of Turku comments. Turku made it into the best 300, just like last year. Other Finnish universities featuring in the top 500 are the Helsinki University of Technology, the University of Oulu, and the University of Jyväskylä. From Sweden, 11 universities made it to the list, led once again by Stockholm's Karolinska Institute, which was ranked at number 48. The Jiao Tong University of Shanghai also produced a separate list of the best one hundred European universities. On this list the University of Helsinki is found at number 23 and the University of Turku in the last group (79-122). Eight Swedish universities are on this list. The Jiao Tong University of Shanghai ranks universities by several indicators of academic or research performance, including alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, highly cited researchers, international scientific articles, and academic performance with respect to the size of an institution.
