Helsingin Sanomat Literature Prize goes to journalist Armas Alvari
Freelance journalist Armas Alvari from Vantaa has won this year's Helsingin Sanomat Literature Prize for his collection of short stories Varmat tapaukset ("Sure Things").
The EUR 12,500 prize, awarded for the best first work of literature, was handed out for the 12th time. The winner was chosen in the unanimous view of the panel of judges from a short-list of ten works. Alvari's literary début deals with social criticism. According to the judges, Alvari (b. 1975) is a perceptive reviewer of Finnish contemporary life, with powerlessness and humour ambiguously overlapping in his short stories, which are all linked to each other. The Helsingin Sanomat/ /Literature Prize continues the traditions of the J.H. Erkko Award for the best first book, which was handed out from 1964 to 1994.
