Newspaper: Rwanda wants Finland to extradite genocide suspect
A Finnish newspaper reports that Rwanda plans to ask Finland to extradite a man living in Finland who is suspected of involvement in the Rwandan genocide in 1994.
"We want those who were guilty of brutal crimes to answer for them before the eyes of the Rwandans as well", said Jean Bosco Mutanga in an interview with the late-edition tabloid Ilta-Sanomat. He insisted that the man would get a fair trial in Rwanda. Members of Finland's National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) are currently in Rwanda investigating the activities of the suspect. He stands accused of having been involved in the planning, leadership, and implementation of the mass-killings in the spring of 11994. The man, who was born in 1951, arrived in Finland four years ago and applied for political asylum here. Porvoo District Court ordered him remanded in custody on April 6th on suspicion of involvement in the genocide. The matter is being investigated by the NBI because the international UN tribunal investigating the killings in Rwanda is not taking any new cases. The case is the first in Finnish Legal history in which officials in this country are investigating events linked with genocide.
