Last year 18 per cent of Finns swore off alcohol for January and many people have made the same resolution this year. According to a survey carried out by the preventive substance abuse work organisation EHYT, 18 per cent of Finns abstained from alcohol in January last year, while in 2011 the figure was around 14 per cent.

The survey revealed that having a booze-free January correlated with a respondent’s level of education: people with lower-level qualifications were more likely to go teetotal for the month.
