EU may rescue Finnish mid-strength beer

The Finnish Grocery Trade Association (PTY) has alighted on the idea of resorting to EU rules in its battle against further restrictions to the availability of alcoholic beverages. In a memo delivered to Helsingin Sanomat, PTY argues that the proposed removal of mid-strength beer from the shelves of grocery shops may be in violation of EU treaties.

The impetus for PTY is a memorandum on the overhaul of Finland's alcohol laws released by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health in August. The ministry concluded that the most effective measure to curb the adverse effects of alcohol consumption would be to sell beverages containing more than 3.5 per cent alcohol by volume exclusively at Alko stores.
