If a new multi-fuel power plant is built in Vuosaari, Helsinki, the construction has to be carried out with the utmost care due to the adjacent nature reserve. If the power plant is not built, the decision will affect land use elsewhere in the capital – essentially by not allowing Helsinki to shut down the old coal-fired power plant in Hanasaari to make way for residential buildings. The Helsinki City Council is set to decide which scenario is preferable next year.
