Finns have expressed their growing reservations over the effectiveness of austerity policies in tackling the lingering economic problems in Finland and Europe, with over one in four respondents to a survey commissioned by Helsingin Sanomat questioning the merits of the policies. On the other hand, most of the respondents viewed that austerity and spending cuts remain preferable to further borrowing.

In a similar survey carried out two years ago, 13 per cent of the respondents were unsure of the merits of austerity, while as many as 70 per cent voiced their backing for stringent austerity measures.
