Roughly 220 prisoners are currently housed in Riihimäki Prison, the majority of whom have been convicted of violent or drug offences.

Tommi Saarinen, the assistant director of security at Riihimäki Prison, says that the usual number of staff were on duty at the time of the homicide and that no heightened tensions between inmates had been detected before the incident. The homicide may result in changes in the security practices at the correctional facility, he reveals.
