The National Coalition Party (NCP) has elected Alexander Stubb, the Minister for European Affairs and Foreign Trade, as its new chairperson. Stubb on Saturday received 500 votes in the second round of the leadership election in Lahti to overcome Paula Risikko, the Minister of Social Affairs and Health, with a 151-vote margin. Jan Vapaavuori, the Minister of Economic Affairs, was eliminated in the first round of voting.

“Are you entirely sure?” Stubb asked when addressing the party conference. The newly-elected chairperson expressed his gratitude to his family, who were not in attendance having bought tickets to a One Direction concert in Stockholm six months ago.
