Numerous air passengers are deprived their rightful compensation for flight delays due to the ambiguous nature of the compensation system. “The problem is that airlines often refer to technical problems or extraordinary circumstances. Without technical knowledge of the aviation industry, it's impossible for passengers to know whether or not the problem was one that the airline should have detected during regular maintenance checks,” explains Leena Lindström, a director at European Consumer Centre (ECC).

ECC helps air passengers in the event of a delay or cancellation whenever the case does not fall within the remit of Finnish authorities, such as when the flight is operated by a foreign airline and the delay occurs outside Finland.
