Hot weather unlikely to compensate for losses incurred in June

Sales across several sectors fell last month in the face of brisk weather. The Finnish Hospitality Association (MaRa), for example, estimates that the sales of its member organisations plunged sharply in June. “In comparison to summer averages, the terrace sales of restaurants slipped by roughly 15—30 per cent,” gauges Timo Lappi, the chief executive at MaRa.

“Even greater drops have surely been recorded, depending on the sector of operation,” he adds.

JT Line and Royal Line, cruise lines operating out of Helsinki, have both recorded a decline in their passenger volumes due to the cold weather. Juha Tiilikainen, the managing director of JT Line, estimates that passenger volumes on cruises to Pihlajasaari have fallen by as much as 50 per cent, while his colleague at Royal Line, Jukka Rautakorpi, says that the volumes fell particularly in the week before Midsummer.
