Seven minutes earlier, substitute Mario Götze had officially graduated from wunderkid to national hero by controlling a lofted diagonal pass from André Schürrle on his chest and firing a precise volley to beat goalkeeper Sergio Romero at his far post. The 22-year-old German forward had yet to make his mark at the 2014 FIFA World Cup but found his bearings at the right time, scoring perhaps Germany's most valuable goal in 24 years.
