What is the first thing you remember about Enid Blyton's Famous Five books? Naturally the plentiful packed lunches the quintet always ate while adventuring. The Famous Five did not put any Thermos flasks into their picnic hampers, however: instead of coffee or tea, the British youngsters washed their picnic lunches down with ginger ale or ginger beer.

The exotic-sounding drink does not actually have anything to do with beer.

Ginger beer is a light grey drink made from ginger by means of fermenting. It has a strong ginger flavour. The bubbles occur naturally when the drink ferments.
