Etla: Google search trends a sign of rising unemployment

Information about the search activity of Finns on Google can be utilised to forecast the Finnish unemployment rate, believes Joonas Tuhkuri, a research trainee at the Research Institute of the Finnish Economy (Etla). In a report published on Thursday, Tuhkuri sifts through the roughly 30 million Google searches performed every day to identify a handful of unemployment-related search trends.

“Unemployment brings about a wide variety of searches. In particular, search terms linked to applying for unemployment allowance stand out, such as unemployment allowance, earnings-related daily allowance and unemployment fund,” Tuhkuri says.
