Public's passive nature is in the spotlight after an incident where two injured girls were left unassisted in the street. People becoming more distant from each other decreases their willingness to stop and help others, states University of Helsinki researcher Anne Birgitta Pessi, who studies altruism and volunteering. The presence of other potential helpers also makes people hesitate to offer their help.
