News that UPM is set to close one of its paper machines in Jämsä came as a shock to the employees of Jämsä River Mills. “They're dumbstruck,” described Jari Kallio, a local representative of the Finnish Paper Workers' Union. Up to 110 jobs are consequently at risk in the Central Finnish town. “That's a high number. The paper machine has been profitable. In that light, this is perplexing,” Kallio admitted.
