Attacks against police officers have become more common in Finland in recent years. A total of 45 incidents in which police officers were subjected to an armed threat or attack were registered last year. The number is as high as in the three preceding years combined. Mikko Paatero, the National Police Commissioner, has expressed his concerns about the safety of police officers, estimating that the statistics are only the tip of the iceberg.
