Finland set to launch witness protection

People looking for a way out of a life of crime may soon request admission to a witness protection programme also in Finland. If admitted, they would be re-settled under a new identity in a new residence and, if necessary, provided other security measures. The legislation on witness protection is set for implementation in early March.

“The National Bureau of Investigation (KRP) is prepared to launch the programme immediately, but only time will tell when we'll have our first case,” says Elina Immonen, a senior adviser at the Ministry of the Interior.

In particular, members of criminal organisations who are willing to break the cycle of crime and testify against other violators are expected to request admission to the programme. Police have estimated that only a handful of people would be admitted to the programme annually.
