Finns have never quite bought into reports that Finland is a model country in education, let alone in science. And they no longer have to, as the country has or is about to slip from the top of international rankings closer to the middle of the pack, more fittingly to the national character. On the other hand, Finland remains a prisoner of both its past successes in PISA assessments and those of Nokia in mobile technology, as is evident from its apparent willingness to slash education funding by billions and cut back on research funding.
